Tommy Fleetwood has added another remarkable achievement to his golfing career by securing the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In a thrilling final round at Le Golf National, Tommy finished with a 5-under 66, narrowly missing out on gold to world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who shot a record-equalling 62. Despite a bogey on the 17th hole, Tommy’s consistent performance throughout the tournament ensured his place on the podium, finishing one shot ahead of Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who took bronze.
“There’s part of me that’s disappointed, of course, but at the same time, I never dreamt that I would be an Olympic medallist,” the seven-time DP World Tour said at his post-tournament press conference Sunday. “You know, I’m still unbelievably proud and happy with the way the week went. I was proud of the way I played today. And, yeah, I enjoyed it so much.”
Tommy’s journey to the silver medal was filled with moments of brilliance. After a challenging start, he rebounded with a series of birdies and showed resilience through tough conditions. His final round included a crucial birdie on the par-three 16th, which temporarily put him in a tie for the lead.
“As a young boy taking up the game of golf, none of us had a chance to win Olympic gold so it was never on our agenda,” said Tommy. “That quickly changes when you’re part of the Olympics, and it feels unbelievably special.
“I know I didn’t win gold but standing on that podium with a medal was one of the most amazing moments I’ve had as a golfer.”
This silver medal is another testament to Tommy’s determination, adding to his impressive record in major championships. It also underscores his ability to perform on the biggest stages in golf, continuing to make his mark in the sport.
Congratulations, Tommy, on this incredible achievement!
